Biography

Tommy Mattioli

Vibraphonist, Dummer, Leader, Composer, Arranger

Tommy was raised in Madison, Wisconsin, and has had drum sticks in his hand since he was a child. He picked up his first pair of mallets at the University of Wisconsin, and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in percussion with an emphasis in Jazz Vibraphone.

 

Relocating to Brooklyn, in 1992, he went on to study timbales and piano at Boys Harbor, strongly influenced by legendary artists, such as, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Cal Tjader, La Sonora Ponceña, and many jazz greats, including T. Monk. Tommy developed a taste for arranging classic tunes, which has earned him the respect and admiration of countless musicians.

His New York experience has led him to carve out a unique niche as a jazz vibraphonist with a Latin sensibility, creating foundation for varied arrangements, rhythms and performances.

As a deeply rooted player in the in the New York City salsa scene, Tommy’s Latin jazz combos and original compositions signify an evolution and honest desire to interact with and perform to various audiences.

Tommy co-founded Grupo Latin Vibe, in New York City in the mid 1990's, when he and Anibal “Tito” Rivera met at a music arranging class.

 

Tommy co-led Grupo Latin Vibe with Tito after the group became the Friday night house band at The Parkside Lounge from 2000 ~ 2013. During those 12 years, the group produced 3 albums (“Mambo City” in the spring of 2003, “All That Vibe” in July of 2005, and “Amanecer” in the spring of 2007), released on CD's, and became internationally recognized as one of the best bands for salsa dancing. 

 

In 2024, Tommy played an instrumental role in the development and creation of the album, “Nostalgia”, released on vinyl record, which is a recompilation and remastering of a few top hits of the past 3 albums.
